Decatur Girls Dominate Conference Awards

BERLIN- After another remarkable season and a fourth consecutive trip to the state’s Final Four, Stephen Decatur’s girls’ varsity lacrosse team dominated the Bayside South post-season awards announced this week including a pair of top honors.

The Decatur girls went 12-4 on the season and won their fourth consecutive regional championship before bowing out in the state semifinals. When the Bayside South post-season awards were announced this week, the Seahawks were well represented including a pair of top honors. Lexie VanKirk was named Bayside South Offensive Player of the Year, while Jillian Mitrecic was named Bayside South Defensive Player of the Year.

Decatur also dominated the All-Conference teams with 10 Seahawks named to the first team out of the 16 players on the list, and five named to the All-Conference Second Team of the 10 players on the list. Named to the All-Conference First Team were VanKirk, Jillian Mitrecic, Sara Mitrecic, Christina Romano, Claire Porter, Logan Figgs, Victoria Kerkovich, Brigitte Ardis, Lily Belle Baker and Chloe Sass. Named to the All-Conference Second Team were Caroline Engle, Logan Townsend, Abby Yesko, Gabby Wilkins and Kennedy Duke.

As further evidence of just how special the 2017 Decatur girls’ team was, seven players have committed to play Division I lacrosse next year. VanKirk is head to James Madison University, while Jillian and Sara Mitrecic will continue their careers at Queens University of Charlotte. Porter is headed to Old Dominion University, Kerkovich is headed to Indiana University of Pennsylvania, Romano is headed to George Mason and Rachel Florek is taking her game to Towson University.
