BERLIN- Worcester Prep’s boys’ varsity lacrosse team closed out its season with a 12-4 loss to Calverton in the Metropolitan Independent Lacrosse League semifinals last week, ending what was otherwise another highly successful season.
Last Wednesday, the Mallards thumped Gunston, 20-6, to win the Eastern Shore Independent Athletic Conference (ESIAC) championship. The game was also a quarterfinal for the MILL in which both teams also compete. Worcester and other private schools across the shore compete in both the ESIAC and the MILL with schedules and matchups overlapping for both conferences in many cases.
The win over Gunston last week earned Worcester the ESIAC title and advanced them to the MILL semifinals and another matchup with Calverton. The Mallards lost to Calverton, 11-7, just a week before and the outcome last week in the MILL semifinals was the same. Calverton beat Worcester, 12-4, to advance to the MILL championship game.
The loss did little to tarnish what was otherwise a remarkable season for the Mallards. After losing to Parkside, 6-5, in the season opener, the Worcester boys reeled off eight straight before falling to Salesianium, 14-8, back on April 15. Otherwise, the Mallards lost only two other games, both to Calverton, including the defeat in the MILL semis. Worcester finished the season with an overall 13-4 record.
