Live Music, Belly Dancers Set For Salisbury’s 1st Saturday

SALISBURY — 1st Saturday in Downtown Salisbury will feature the band “breakfast” and belly dancers Roma and Luna Scura on May 7, from 4 to 7 p.m. on the steps of the Government Office Building.

Sponsored by the City of Salisbury and Park & Flea, the band “breakfast” describes itself as “a movement. A coming together of all the friends and talents around us to create something that is original, genuine, and relevant. Our hope is to change the lives around us for the better and make a difference in our generation.”

Also performing are Roma and Luna Scura, two local belly dancers with two different styles. Roma is a modern gypsy tribal style dancer, while Luna is a classical Egyptian style dancer.

The band will play from 4 to 7 p.m. Roma and Luna Scura will perform during the set break, from 5:30 to 6 p.m.

During the May and June 1st Saturday events, the Salisbury Jaycees will be selling beer and wine to raise money for their various community projects. Alcohol will only be permitted in the street area, and not on the lawn, which is the spectator area. No alcohol will be permitted to leave the event and no outside alcohol will be allowed into the event.

“We feel the alcohol will be a positive addition to our event, an added convenience for our attendees, and a great partnership with the Jaycees, who will use the money they raise on our community,” said Sarah Rayne, co-chair of the 1st Saturday Committee. “We are still 100% family friendly. We’ve got a great band and a great intermission performance lined up. Don’t forget your blankets and lawn chairs.”

All attendees are asked to bring a donation for Operation We Care, a locally-based nonprofit organization that sends care packages and supports our military, law enforcement and fire/EMS. A list of the most needed items can be found at www.operationwecare.org. 1st Saturday will collect donations for Operation We Care throughout the entirety of its 2016 season.

This year, 1st Saturday will host a different food truck every month for the convenience of its attendees. This month’s food truck is Rosenfeld’s Jewish Delicatessen, offering a traditional, kosher-style, full-service Jewish deli. Downtown restaurants will also be open and offering carry out. Attendees are asked to dispose of their trash in one of the many trash receptacles provided by the City of Salisbury. There will also be receptacles labeled for recycling.

The 1st Saturday Art Market has grown this year, so look for new artists selling locally-made products. Also in the market will be Goatopia, bringing with them some furry friends, and the Art Institute & Gallery, which will set up an art activity for children.

Be sure to also visit the Wicomico Partnership for Families and Children table, where free resource bags will be distributed. Stop by the OC104 van for some freebies, and also visit the tables for the City of Salisbury, Park & Flea, We Heart SBY, and AMP Studio.

Ride your bicycle to 1st Saturday and leave it in the capable hands of Bike SBY, which is offering a free valet service.

Limited edition 2016 1st Saturday T-shirts will be available for $10 each. All proceeds will benefit 1st Saturday’s continued efforts to provide a free music event in Salisbury’s Downtown.

1st Saturday is an all-volunteer effort, a downtown economic development initiative, and a project of the Salisbury Arts & Entertainment District Committee.
