Little League Opening Day Set For Saturday

BERLIN- The Berlin Little League season kicks off tomorrow, Saturday, April 11, with a parade through the downtown area followed by a full slate of festivities throughout the day at the league’s complex.

The annual Little League parade, a staple of the town’s hectic mid-April Saturday schedule and another sign of spring, will start at 9 a.m. with the boys’ and girls’ team marching over the Little League Complex. Opening ceremonies will be held on Field “C” at 10 a.m., followed by the first pitch for all teams on all fields at 11 a.m. Later in the day, the annual Pitch, Hit and Run competition will be held on the Junior League Field beginning at 1 p.m.

The Berlin Little League’s Opening Day celebration is just one of several events in and around the downtown area this weekend. Also on Saturday, the town will host the 3rd Annual St. Paul’s United Methodist Church Memorial 5K run and walk. The annual event is hosted by the local church in honor of those who have passed away. After speeches and comments from local officials and church representatives, the race will begin around 7:30 a.m.

The event has grown each year from around 150 the first year to nearly double that last year. The 5K is open to runners and walkers, although participation in the actual event is not required. Those who don’t want to run or walk the course are invited to turn out to support participants and enjoy the music and other activities associated with the event.
