Champs Crowned In OC Tennis Invitational

OCEAN CITY- A total of 11 universities from all over the region competed last weekend in the 7th annual Ocean City Tennis on Campus Invitational with Villanova University edging the Naval Academy in a tight contest that went down to the final mixed doubles match.

Villanova won the championship flight with a narrow 26-23 win over the Naval Academy. Villanova did not secure the victory in the mixed doubles match. Navy got on the board first in the women’s doubles match with a 6-2 victory, but Villanova responded with a win in the men’s doubles match. Navy won the women’s singles match and Villanova won the men’s doubles match, setting the stage for the winner-take-all mixed doubles. For the record, Princeton finished third in the championship flight, beating West Virginia, 26-19.

In the silver flight, UMBC took first place with a 27-20 win over Villanova. UMBC secured the victory with wins in the men’s, women’s and mixed doubles matches. James Madison University took third in the silver flight, beating Penn State, 30-9.

In the bronze flight, Virginia Tech won the championship, outlasting Mount Saint Mary’s and Salisbury University.
