Decatur Girls Fall In State Semifinals

BERLIN- The Stephen Decatur girls’ varsity lacrosse team’s bid for a state championship ended last weekend in a 12-5 loss to C.M. Wright in the Final Four in a game that spanned two days because of weather and lightning threats.

The Seahawks were seeded second in the state 3A-2A East Section I bracket and won three straight games to claim their fourth straight region championship. However, a possible state championship eluded the Seahawks again as they could not get past a tough C.M. Wright team in the state semifinals last weekend in a game that started on Friday and ended on Saturday in Anne Arundel County.

The Seahawks opened with a 17-10 win over Easton in the second round of the 3A-2A East Section I bracket, then went on the road to face Kent Island, the top seed in the section, last Monday. Decatur beat the Buccaneers in a close one, 11-10, to advance to the region championship for the fourth straight year.

In the region championship, the Seahawks faced another familiar foe in Huntingtown last Wednesday. Decatur had beaten Huntingtown in the 3A-2A East region championship the year before. Last week, Decatur beat Huntingtown again to claim the 3A-2A East region championship and return to the state Final Four for the fourth year in a row.

Last Friday, the Seahawks traveled to Northeast High School in Anne Arundel County to face C.M. Wright in the state semifinals with the threat of rain and thunderstorms looming. The start of the game was delayed because of lightning threats, but once it started, the Seahawks got out to an early lead on a goal by Victoria Kerkovich. C.M. Wright responded with a goal on their next possession to quickly tie the game at 1-1 when a lightning threat suspended the game again for another 30 minutes.

After the delay, C.M. Wright came out firing and scored twice quickly to take a 3-1 lead. C.M. Wright was leading 5-2 with about four minutes remaining in the when the threat of lightning delayed the game again. This time, play would not be resumed and the game was suspended until Saturday afternoon.

The Decatur girls had to return to Berlin on Friday night with the game suspended and the Seahawks trailing 5-2 with about four minutes left in the half. The Seahawks then had to return to Anne Arundel County on Saturday afternoon for the resumption of the game at 4 p.m. The Seahawks had to go back to Berlin on Friday and then back to Anne Arundel County on Saturday. When play resumed on Saturday, C.M. Wright steadily pulled away from the Seahawks and won the semifinal game, 12-5, to reach the state championship.

Despite the tough loss in the state semifinals, the season was a rousing success for the Seahawks again this year. The Decatur girls went 12-4 on the season and reached the state semifinals for the fourth straight year.
