Decatur Girls Claim 4th Straight Region Title

BERLIN- Stephen Decatur’s girls’ varsity lacrosse team won its fourth straight state regional championship this week, beating Huntingtown, 12-7, on Wednesday to earn a return trip to the Final Four for the fourth straight year.

The Seahawks were seeded second in the 3A-2A-East Section I bracket and faced a pair of familiar foes on their way to the regional championship. Decatur beat third-seeded Easton in the second round last Friday after receiving a first-round bye, setting up another date with Kent Island, the top seed in the section, on Monday.

The Seahawks had to go on the road to face a tough Kent Island team and edged the Buccaneers, 11-10, to reach the regional championship game for the fourth straight year. Decatur met another familiar team in the 3A-2A East Region championship game on Wednesday in Huntingtown. The Seahawks beat Huntingtown in the region championship last year for their third straight before falling in the state semifinals.

On Wednesday, Decatur held a 7-4 lead over Huntingtown at the half, but rode a big start to the second half to steadily pull away. The Seahawks increased their lead to 11-5 with 16 minutes remaining and cruised to the 12-7 win. Decatur will face C.M. Wright in the state semifinals on Friday.
