ACT’s Native Plant Sale Saturday

BERLIN — For the 18th year, Assateague Coastal Trust will offer a selection of native flowering perennials, heirloom tomatoes, veggies, fruits and herbs at its annual Native Plant Sale. The event will take place this Saturday, May 6 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at ACT’s new office at 9842 Main Street in Berlin.

The event occurs only one week before Mother’s Day, just in time for shoppers to honor their moms with natural gifts that keep on giving and are good for the environment, too.

New customers will marvel at the variety of plants available at the sale, all suited to thrive in our local area, including plants that do best in sunny or shady locations.  Returning customers will be drawn to the new varieties of perennials this year and the dramatically expanded selection of heirloom vegetable and fruits, including squash, eggplant, melons, peppers, cherries, and of course tomatoes.

“We’re really excited about the broad selection of old favorites and new gems at this year’s sale,” said ACT Outreach Director Matt Heim.  “We’ve added some beautiful new flowering plants and really diversified our stock of fruits and veggies.”

While the Plant Sale is one of ACT’s big annual fundraisers, it also provides a good platform to advance the organization’s clean water mission.

“Native plants require less water and fertilizer, and provide habitat for local critters,” said ACT Executive Director Katthy Phillips.  “They also attract birds, bees and butterflies which enhances pollination and propagation of native species. It’s a win win win for local gardeners, ACT and our environment,” said Phillips.

If you’ve already placed an order online, your plants will be waiting for you for quick and easy pickup.

There are plenty of selections available for purchase on the day of the sale too. If you want a sneak peak of this year’s offerings, visit ACT on the web at www.ActForBays.org.
