Seahawk Golfers Solid In State Championships

BERLIN- After narrowly missing the cut in the team tournament last week, Decatur’s varsity golf team members competing as individuals turned in strong performances on the final day of the state championship meet.

Last Monday, the Seahawks competed as a team in the first round of the state championships at the University of Maryland College Park course, finishing fifth among the 12 teams competing. The Seahawks shot a team score of 333, which was just one stroke short of qualifying for the finals in the team tournament.

However, three Decatur golfers made to cut to qualify as individual players in the state championship match on Wednesday and each turned in solid scores. Matt Kinsey shot a 77 and a 79 to finish with a 155, which was good enough for 16th overall among the dozens of qualifiers in the state championship match. Matt Kristick shot an 82 and a 79 to finish with a 161, which was 25th overall. Tanner Leonard shot an 84 and an 87 to finish with a 171, which was 53rd overall.
