Robert Joseph McDonald

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. — Celebrating the life of Robert Joseph McDonald, who was born May 15, 1944 in Mt. Kisco, N.Y. to Madeline and John McDonald.

A true American hero, he received two Purple Hearts serving with the U.S. Army’s 9th Infantry Division in Vietnam. Bob returned to achieve a Bachelor’s Degree from the Rochester Institute of Technology before moving to Ocean City.

Bob’s life changed forever on Aug. 2, 1978. He attended his first meeting of Alcoholics Anonymous and met his future wife, Ann, resulting in 38 years of sobriety and 33 years of marriage. Bob and Ann were married on Sept. 4, 1982, remaining faithful and true through all of life’s adventures.

Bob’s life continued to grow richer, as he and Ann were soon blessed with their son Joseph. The family moved to Glenwood, Md. while Bob made the transition from selling real estate to relocation management for the National Credit Union Administration. Bob retired from the NCUA in 2007 after 20 years of government service. He and Ann relocated to Myrtle Beach and eventually built their dream home in Grand Dunes, where he could work on his golf game and cultivate his crepe myrtles.

Bob was an active and outspoken participant in many organizations. Most prominently, he was truly dedicated to sharing his experience, strength and hope with his fellow alcoholics. Even more than AA though, Bob loved to support his son Joseph. He attended every football game, wrestling match and baseball game through high school and into college. He was active in fundraising for the teams and even created a boosters organization for the Army-West Point Sprint Football Team. Bob was an active member in the Knights of Columbus, achieving the Fourth Degree.

He is survived by his loving wife of 34 years, Ann McDonald of Myrtle Beach, and son, Joseph McDonald of Denver, Colo., as well as three brothers, Danny McDonald of Pawley’s Island, S.C., John McDonald of Rehobeth, Del., and Lewis De Rosa of N. Hampstead, N.H., and a sister, Joelyn Manfredi of Columbia, S.C.

His awesome journey that began here on Earth will continue in the spirit. God bless you Bob.
