OCEAN CITY — A New Jersey woman was critically injured when struck by a vehicle while crossing Coastal Highway against a pedestrian signal on Friday night.
Around 10:20 p.m. last Friday, Ocean City Police responded to a reported pedestrian collision at 127th Street and Coastal Highway. The investigation revealed a 19-year-old Manalapan, N.J. woman was crossing Coastal Highway from west to east in the north crosswalk against a pedestrian signal when she was struck by a Mercedes GLK 250 driven by a 46-year-old male from Baltimore.
The victim was transported by Ocean City EMS to Peninsula Regional Medical Center in Salisbury where she was listed in critical condition. She was later transferred to Shock Trauma in Baltimore. Her condition as of mid-week had not been updated.
Last Friday’s vehicle-pedestrian collision was the second this month. Shortly after 1 a.m. on May 3, a 67-year-old Pennsylvania man was struck and killed by an Ocean City Police Chevy Tahoe patrol vehicle driven by an on-duty five-year veteran on Coastal Highway at 94th Street. The pedestrian was crossing Coastal Highway from east to west in the north crosswalk against the pedestrian signal when he was struck by the police vehicle in drizzly, foggy conditions. The officer was traveling southbound on Coastal Highway on routine patrol at the time of the incident. The victim was transported by Ocean City EMS to Atlantic General Hospital where he was pronounced deceased.
With two pedestrian collisions this month and the arrival of the summer season suddenly descending on the resort, the Ocean City Police Department (OCPD) is reminding residents and visitors to always wait for the pedestrian signal before crossing Coastal Highway. In addition, motorists are advised to be aware of increased pedestrian traffic on Coastal Highway and the resort’s other roadways.
