BERLIN — Popular summertime events are returning to Berlin this summer after the Mayor and Council stamped their seal of approval on Monday.

The Touch-A-Truck event will be held Saturday, May 7 from 10 a.m. till noon at Stephen Decatur Park and is sponsored by SonRise Church. Cars and trucks used by the Berlin Police Department, the Berlin Fire Department and Berlin Electric Company will be on display alongside tractors from Perdue Farms.

“For those of you that don’t know, it is definitely worth going to this event,” said Mayor Gee Williams. “I was there last year, and regardless of what age you are, you will really enjoy this. I encourage little kids, big kids, and everyone in between to go.”

Williams continued his praise for the event, saying “you can find out about something you might normally take for granted. People are encouraged to ask whatever questions they want.” The Berlin Electric Company’s Power Town display will also be out at the event. It’s educational and a hands-on learning experience for all ages.

The Outdoor Movie Nights held in downtown Berlin, Stephen Decatur Park and Henry Park begin June 18 and will continue six alternating Saturday nights through Aug. 27.

Sponsored by the Berlin Parks Commission and the town, the FunFlicks Outdoor Movies company will be returning this year with its 21-foot screen and projectors for family movie nights.

“The outdoor movie nights were successful last year, and we’re looking forward to more success this year,” said Mike Wiley, chair of the Berlin Parks Commission.

The movies start around 8:30 p.m. or whenever the sun goes down and wrap up around 10 p.m. with this year’s lineup starting and ending with the “trademark” Town of Berlin movies Tuck Everlasting and Runaway Bride being showed on Jefferson Street downtown. The series is rounded out with classic family films like the Princess Bride and the Wizard of Oz among others.

Williams remarked at the Town Council meeting that “they’re all really good family movies, no controversy involved here.”

Those who are thinking of attending should plan on bringing their own folding chair or blanket to the event as well as their own snacks. The Outdoor Movie Nights are weather dependent and will be rescheduled in the event of inclement weather.
