BERLIN- Worcester Prep’s boys’ varsity lacrosse team lost a tough one in the season opener on the road against Parkside this week, rallying from a three-goal deficit late, only to lose in overtime to the Rams, 6-5.
In the season opener for both teams, Parkside scored first, but Worcester’s Wyatt Richins tied it at 1-1 late in the first quarter. Tucker Brown gave Worcester a brief 2-1 lead with a goal early in the second, but the Rams scored four straight to take a 5-2 lead and control of the game.
The Mallards ramped up the pressure on offense and began to chip away at the lead. Richins scored two goals to cut the lead to just one at 5-4 with time running down. With 17 seconds remaining, Worcester’s Pat Petrara fired a shot from the perimeter the Parkside keeper made a nice save. However, Richins was able to scoop up the loose ball and fire it home to tie the game at 5-5 as time expired in regulation.
Both teams had opportunities in overtime, but it was Parkside converting with around two minutes remaining in the extra period on a goal by Jakob Keidel to take the 6-5 overtime win. Despite the comeback, the Mallards opened the season at 0-1 and will face crosstown rival Decatur at home on Saturday.
