BERLIN- Stephen Decatur’s varsity wrestling team turned in a solid performance against Bayside North powerhouse Kent Island last week, beating the Buccaneers, 32-24, in a back and forth match.
At 220, Dryden Brous beat Kent Island’s Bert Schrecongost and Jian Joobeen beat Grayson Colchagoff at 285. Robert Kaminski won by forfeit at 106 and Josh Lawson beat James VanLew at 113. Kent Island got on the board with a win by Dylan Finlay over Decatur’s Jeremy Danner.
Carl Echols got the Seahawks back on track with a win over Brady Levasseur at 126, but Kent Island responded with wins by Justin Thomas over Robert Scafone at 132 and Ryan Domogauer over Aiden Nichols at 138 to cut the Seahawk’s lead to 21-15.
Andrew McKahan beat Ryan Salus at 145 and Adam McInerny beat Nicholas Leisenring at 152 to extend the lead to 29-15, but Kent Island wasn’t done yet. Kent Island’s Jake Hipps beat Lucus Aulinskis at 160 and Brady Loveless beat Tyler Vansice at 170 to cut the margin. Caleb Bourne responded with a win over Arne Nelson at 182, but James Connor beat Decatur’s Gavin Payne at 195. However, the Seahawks won the match, 32-24.
Earlier in the week, the Seahawks beat Bayside South rival Bennett, 62-13. Decatur’s Robert Kaminski beat Patrick Hughes at 106 and Josh Lawson beat Gene Williams at 113 for an early Seahawk lead. Jeremy Danner kept the roll going at 120 with a win over Zachary Lacier. Carl Echols beat Cole Nestor at 126 and Robert Scafone beat Matt Darcy at 132.
Andy McKahan kept it going for Decatur with a win over Tanner Farro at 138. Adam McInerney beat David Darcy at 145 and Lucus Aulinskis beat Keyshawn Dale at 152. Decatur got on the board at 160 with a win by Chad Farro over Zerrick Collins. Louis Bernard made it two in a row for Bennett at 170 with a win over Tyler Vansice.
Caleb Bourne beat William Harrison at 182, Dryden Brous beat Trent Ireland at 195 and Jian Joobeen beat Angel Trujillo at 220. Bennett’s Loma Thomas beat Decatur’s Jose Robles at 285, but the damage had been done and the Seahawks earned the 62-13 win.
