BERLIN- Stephen Decatur’s varsity wrestling team got it season off to a fast start last week with a resounding 49-22 win over defending Bayside Conference champion North Caroline at home on Wednesday.
Decatur hosted the Bulldogs in the season opener for both teams last Wednesday before an energetic home crowd and the Seahawks fed off the intensity. The match opened with North Caroline’s Brandon Suitt defeating Decatur’s Jeremy Danner at 120. Carl Echols got the Seahawks on the board with a win over Seth Layton at 126. Mike Jantz returned the favor for the Bulldogs with a win over Decatur’s Robert Scafone at 132.
Andy McKahan defeated North Caroline’s Connor McCormick at 138 and Andy McInerney defeated Dakota Kellermeyer at 145 to put the Seahawks ahead, 15-7. North Caroline stopped the run with a win by Tyler Bauer over Christopher Klebe at 152. Decatur then won the next three to begin to pull away from the Bulldogs.
Brett Kim beat Nick Zinkand at 160, Tyler Vansice beat Alex Grable at 170 and Caleb Bourne beat Tyler Riley at 182. North Caroline won the next two with Alex Eaton defeating Dryden Brous at 195 and Ryan Rawlings defeating Gavin Payne at 220. However, Decatur won the last three matches to close out the match. Jian Joobeen beat Jacob Shultz at 285, Robert Kaminski beat Ryan Bauer at 106 and Josh Lawson beat Jeremy Brockson at 113.
