BERLIN– You spend a third of your life in bed.
That, Dick Cerv says, is why it’s so important to have a good mattress.
“There’s nothing better than getting up after a good night’s sleep,” Cerv said.

Cerv, owner of Mattress Masters in Ocean Pines, has been providing area residents with a local source for their bedding needs for more than 15 years. Though the recent demolition of the building he formerly operated out of has forced a move, Mattress Masters is now going strong in a new space just across Cathell Road.
“I think it’s a better location,” Cerv said. “I’m right on Route 589.”
Mattress Masters is now located in the same building as Mama Della’s and Noble Grape. Cerv said he opted to stay in the Ocean Pines area to remain convenient for his regular customers.
“I thought about Route 50 but I’d have lost most of my repeat customers,” he said. “Seventy percent of my customers have bought from me before.”
Cerv, who at one time worked in the meat business in the Midwest, has spent recent years selling mattresses. While he had several stores in the area at one point, he downsized when the economy started to struggle and has concentrated on just one store since then. He works hard to serve his customers, accommodating those who can’t make it during regular hours with appointments and offering same day — often within an hour — delivery.

“We offer free same day delivery,” Cerv said. “We set it up for you and take away your old bed. And that’s all free.”
Cerv says he’s able to keep prices down because the store has little in the way of payroll costs. The array of mattresses he has available, either in store or by special order, start as low as $189 for a queen set.
“I carry most of the major brands,” he said.
Cerv, who lives in the St. Martin’s area, enjoys working in the community he lives in and strives to provide customers with the best deals on beds.
“This is kind of a community in itself,” he said. “If you give somebody a good deal, they’re highly recommendable.”
