BERLIN- The Stephen Decatur boys’ varsity soccer team’s up and down season came to a close with a 3-1 loss to Atholton in the state 3A-East Section II semifinal at home on Tuesday.
The Seahawks were hot and cold all season, finishing 6-5-1, but earned the number-two seed in the Class 3A-East Section II bracket and a first-round bye. Atholton was the number-three seed and had to get by second-seeded Northeast to get a shot at the Seahawks. On a chilly night at Seahawk stadium in the second game of a double-header, Atholton knocked off Decatur, 3-1, on Tuesday to advance and earn a shot at the sectional title against top-seeded Bennett.
Bennett had to go to overtime to beat Chesapeake in its sectional semifinal on Tuesday at home. For Decatur, the loss in the sectional final closed out a season during which the Seahawks were never really able to string together a bunch of wins.
Meanwhile, other Bayside Conference teams continued to advance this week. In the 2A-East Region Section II, third-seeded Parkside beat Wicomico and Easton to advance to face top-seeded Kent Island. In the 1A-East, second-seeded Pocomoke will face top-seeded Crisfield in the sectional final.
