Seahawks Sweep Pair From Bayside North Foes

BERLIN- Stephen Decatur’s girls’ varsity soccer team swept a pair of Bayside North opponents this week, but the Seahawks will not a get a shot at the conference championship after Parkside edged Bennett last week to clinch the south title.

After Decatur dropped a close one last week to Parkside, the Seahawks knew they would need a little help to repeat as Bayside South champions. Bennett had to beat the Rams and the Seahawks needed to take care of their own business to force a tie for the conference lead.

Decatur did hold up its end, beating defending Bayside North champ and undefeated Queen Anne’s, 4-2, last week, and followed that up with a win over Kent Island on Monday. However, Parkside beat Bennett last week to clinch the Bayside South title, leaving the Seahawks looking at a possible deep run in the state playoffs.

Against Queen Anne’s last week, Jillian Mitrecic got Decatur on the board just six minutes into the contest and the Seahawks took a 1-0 lead into halftime. In the second half, Jessica Wharton scored on an assist by Lexie VanKirk to extend the lead to 2-0. Alexis McDonough then scored on a long shot from the perimeter to put the Seahawks ahead, 3-0.

Queen Anne’s rebounded, scoring two goals in the span of less than a minute to cut the Decatur lead to 3-2 and the game was far from over. However, VanKirk added a late goal for Decatur to push the lead to 4-2. With the pair of wins, Decatur’s record now stands at 9-2 on the season and the Seahawks should garner a high seed when the state playoff brackets are released next week.
