Seahawks Fall To Lions, 34-6, Streak Hits Four

BERLIN- Stephen Decatur’s varsity football team dropped another one to a tough Bayside North opponent last week, falling to visiting Queen Anne’s, 34-6, on Thursday.

The game started well enough for the Seahawks, who went 63 yards on 14 plays on their first possession to take an early 6-0 lead. The drive consumed much of the first quarter and the Seahawks took the early lead on quarterback Darien McKenzie’s one-yard run, but that was the only time struggling Decatur would cross the goal line.

Meanwhile, the defense started well, forcing Queen Anne’s to punt on its first two possessions, but the Lions eventually got their offense cranked up. About halfway through the second quarter, Queen Anne’s went on a long, 83-yard drive to take a 7-6 lead. The Lions added another score just before the half to take a 14-6 lead into intermission.

Queen Anne’s continued its big run spanning the end of the second quarter and the beginning of the third with another touchdown on its first possession to extend the lead to 20-6. With injuries and illnesses claiming many of Decatur’s top playmakers, including prolific running back Dryden Brous and wide receiver Tyree Henry, the Seahawks had few answers on offense.

Queen Anne’s scored a defensive touchdown on a fumble returned 23 yards for a score to extend the lead to 26-6. The Lions added a late score in the fourth to close out the 34-6 victory. The loss was the fourth straight for the Seahawks, each coming against Bayside North opponents.

After starting the season with a promising 3-0 record, the Seahawks now stand at 3-4, but at least they are finished with the Bayside North. Decatur closes out the regular season with three straight against Bayside South opponents, starting with tomorrow’s game at Parkside in a rare Saturday contest. After that, the Seahawks will face Bennett next week before closing out with the traditional season-ending game with county rival Snow Hill.
