Decatur Girls Fall To Parkside, 3-1

BERLIN- The Bayside South girls’ varsity soccer championship picture got a little muddier this week after Parkside beat Stephen Decatur, 3-1, at home on Monday.

With the win, the Rams took sole possession of first place in the Bayside South standings, while Decatur and Bennett lurk just one game behind. Parkside is now 6-1 in the conference, while Decatur and Bennett are each 5-2. Bennett has a game remaining with Parkside, and if the Clippers beat the Rams, the Bayside South could end in a three-way tie, assuming, of course, Decatur takes care of its own business the rest of the way.

On Monday, Parkside scored first on a penalty kick about 16 minutes into the contest to take a 1-0 lead over the Seahawks. Less than a minute later, the Rams scored again to extend the lead to 2-0. Decatur cut the lead to 2-1 on a goal by Lexi VanKirk with about five minutes left in the first half, and while the Rams had dominated for much of the first period, it the contest was still up for grabs.

The score remained 2-1 through much of the second half as the Seahawks couldn’t break through for a tying goal. Parkside scored with about four minutes left in the game to secure the 3-1 lead and take control of the Bayside South. Parkside plays Bennett on Friday in a game made up because of the storm on October 2 and could virtually wrap up the South title. Decatur finishes the regular season next week against Kent Island and Wicomico.
