Mallard’s Soccer Teams Cruise In Openers

BERLIN- Most of Worcester Prep’s fall sports teams got their 2015 campaigns off to a fast start last week with sweeps of visiting Gunston in three games at the same time on Thursday.

Worcester’s boys’ varsity soccer team dismantled Gunston, 10-1, in its season opener at home last Thursday. The deep and talented Mallards, led by co-captains Wyatt Richins and Owen Nally, scored early and often against the Herons and cruised in the opening match. Meanwhile, the Worcester defense, led by returning goalkeeper Charlie Pritchard, kept the Herons at bay and allowed just the single meaningless goal. The Mallards went 9-6-1 last year, but lost in the ESIAC semifinals. With a deep and talented team this year, Worcester hopes to improve on that mark.

On the adjacent field, the Worcester Prep girls’ varsity soccer team was enjoying a similar result. The Mallards routed Gunston, 8-0, to start the season with a 1-0 record. Last year, the Worcester girls went 9-2 and reached the ESIAC championship before falling to old rival Saints Peter and Paul in overtime. With about two thirds of that team, returning, along with a talented bunch of promising underclassmen joining the ranks, the Worcester girls should contend for the conference championship again this year.
