Seahawks Finish 4th In Bayside Championships

BERLIN- Stephen Decatur’s varsity wrestling team turned in a strong performance in the Bayside Championships this week, finishing fourth overall as a team and placing in eight brackets including two championships.

The Bayside Championships began last weekend with early rounds and finished up with the semifinals and finals early this week. Decatur finished fourth overall among the 15 teams represented with 171 total team points. North Caroline was first with 202 team points, while Easton was second with 183 and Kent Island was third with 173.

In the 120-pound bracket, Decatur’s T.J. Scafone won the individual championship, beating St. Michael’s Varuzuhan Wiseley in the finals. Scafone swept four matches to win the title. At 126, Andy McKahan won the championship, beating North Caroline’s Connor McCormick in the final. McKahan had to win three matches to collect his championship.

In the 154-pound bracket, Decatur’s Tyler Vansice finished second, falling to Kent Island’s Steven Smith in the final. Ean Spencer also finished second for Decatur in the 220-pound bracket, falling to Andrew Wade of Easton in the championship. Jeremiah Purnell took third at 132, Brett Kim took third at 160 and Gavin Payne took fifth at 285.
