BERLIN- Worcester Prep’s boys’ varsity basketball team had an up and down week, beating Salisbury Christian last Wednesday before falling to Chincoteague on Monday.
In its first regular season game since the holiday break last Wednesday, the Mallards played a see-saw game with Salisbury Christian and held on the game’s final win to secure the 5-47 win. Worcester led 49-47 with time running out, but Salisbury Christian had the ball with 10 seconds remaining. Worcester’s Wyatt Richins made a great defensive play and knocked the ball away and was fouled in the process. Richins made a free throw to secure the 50-47 win for Worcester.
On Monday, Worcester traveled to Chincoteague and fell to the Ponies, 50-39, despite a late comeback attempt. The Mallards trailed 14-7 after one period and 31-13 at the half. However, Worcester chipped away at the lead in the second half, outscoring the Ponies, 26-19, in the final two periods. The late charge was not enough and the Mallards fell to Chincoteague, 50-39.
With the loss, the Mallards’ regular season record fell to 5-3 overall and 5-5 including two losses in the Governor’s Challenge over the holiday break. Worcester faces Gunston at home this evening.
