BERLIN- Stephen Decatur’s girls’ varsity basketball team got its season off to a fast start last week with a 76-17 win over North Caroline in the opener, but fell to Mardela, 72-63, at home on Tuesday.
Against North Caroline, the Seahawks came out firing on all cylinders and cruised to the 76-16 win. Dayona Godwin led with 27 points, while Amya Mumford added 12 and Payton VanKirk chipped in 11. Lexie VanKirk grabbed 10 rebounds in the win.
On Tuesday, the Decatur girls faced Mardela in front of a packed home gym as part of a double-header with the boys’ varsity team in a rematch of sorts that carried over from last year. Decatur beat Mardela, 40-36, late last season to end the Warriors’ unbeaten streak and there was a little more at stake for the Warriors in just the second game of the season on Tuesday.
The game was tight through the first quarter, which ended with the Warriors holding a narrow 11-9 lead. In the second quarter, Mardela turned up the defense, which created easy scoring opportunities in their end of the court as the Warriors extended their lead to 33-18 at the half.
Decatur battled back and cut the lead to just 13 points at the end of the third quarter. The Seahawks then cut Mardela’s lead to single digits as low as nine points in the fourth, but the Warriors hung on late and escaped with a 72-63 win in a game that had a playoff feel despite being only the second game of the season. The Seahawks host Wicomico today and then hit the road against Easton next Monday in the last game before the holiday break.
