BERLIN — Worcester Prep three-sport athlete Sophie Brennan last week signed a national letter of intent to attend and play Division I lacrosse for Furman University next year.

Brennan, who also plays soccer and basketball at Worcester, is a standout lacrosse player, prolific scorer and team leader for the Mallards. After weighing other options, Brennan chose Furman University in Greenville, S.C. as the school to best further her academic and athletic career.

Furman is beginning its first season with a woman’s varsity lacrosse program in 2014-2015 and Brennan will be among the talented young players around which the program will be built. The Paladins will be starting their second full season when Brennan arrives next year and she will be among the school’s third recruiting class. While she had other opportunities, Brennan said she has always had a desire to attend the idyllic school in South Carolina.

“Ever since middle school, I looked at Furman as a place I wanted to be,” she said. “I looked at other schools, but when I found out they were starting a varsity lacrosse program, it made my decision much easier.”

Because Furman is just getting its Division I varsity program up and running, Brennan will likely have an opportunity to make an immediate impact for the Paladins when she arrives next year. Furman’s current roster is already dotted with top high school players from up and down the east coast including a handful from Maryland.

“I expect to get to Furman and be able to play and make an impact right off the bat as a freshman,” she said. “They’re attracting a lot of great players and the future looks bright for the program.”
