BERLIN — A local woman perished in two-vehicle accident on Route 50 at Route 346 early Thursday morning.

Shortly after 8 a.m. on Thursday, Maryland State Police troopers responded to a reported motor vehicle accident on Route 50 at Route 346, or Old Ocean City Blvd., in Berlin.

The preliminary investigation revealed a 2008 Volvo C70 driven by Donna Clarke, 66, of Berlin, was traveling westbound on Route 346 when she failed to yield the right-of-way to a Mazda SUV traveling eastbound on Route 50 driven by Lauren King of Salisbury. The two vehicles collided and suffered extensive damage. Clarke was unresponsive and had to be extricated from her vehicle.

Both parties were transported to the hospital for injuries sustained in the collision. Upon arriving at Atlantic General Hospital in Berlin, the driver of the at-fault vehicle, Clarke, was pronounced deceased as a result of injuries sustained in the collision.

The nature of King’s injuries and her condition as of mid-day Thursday were not known. Clarke was a long-time employee of Peninsula Orthopedics and worked out of both the Berlin and Salisbury offices. The investigation conducted by the Maryland State Police Reconstruction Team remained open as of mid-day on Thursday.
