BERLIN- Stephen Decatur’s girls’ varsity softball team beat Bayside South rival Parkside, 5-2, on Tuesday to improve to 2-1 on the season.

Trailing 1-0 early, the Seahawks scored a run in the bottom of the second and added another in the bottom of the third to take a 2-1 lead they would not relinquish. Parkside did not roll over, however, and made the game interesting late, but the Seahawks held on for the 5-2 win to improve to 2-1.

In the bottom of the second, Decatur’s Marina Jones led off with a single and moved to second on a fielder’s choice. Taylor Booker then drove in Jones from second with a base hit. Parkside threatened in the third, getting a runner to third base, but Decatur’s Beth Laque worked out of the jam.

In the bottom of the third, Decatur took a 2-1 lead on a one-out double by Taylor Black, followed by a base hit by Lauren Laque. Decatur threatened again in the bottom of the fourth. A walk by Sam Kefauver put runners on first and second with one out. Beth Laque then grounded to third, forcing the runner at third base. After Marina Jones reached on what amounted to a swinging bunt to load the bases, a groundout to first ended the threat. The Seahawks kept forcing the issue, eventually adding three more runs to take the 5-2 over the Rams.
