BERLIN- It was worth the wait for the Decatur girls’ varsity basketball team on Tuesday as the Seahawks outlasted two snowed-out days before trouncing visiting Northeast of Anne Arundel County, 80-47, in the second game of a double-header on Wednesday.

The top-seeded Seahawks were supposed to start their potential state playoff run on Monday, but the game was postponed due to the winter storm. The same scenario played out on Tuesday, forcing the Seahawks to wait it out until Wednesday to get back on the court for their first game in the state 3A-South playoffs. Any concerns about the long layoff were quickly put to rest, however, as the Seahawks jumped out to an early lead and never looked back to advance.

Decatur scored the first seven points of the game on two baskets by Marina Jones and a fast break lay-up by Dayona Godwin. The Seahawks built the lead to 19-6 at the end of the first and continued to pour it on in the second and led 46-18 at intermission. Northeast could not keep up in the second half with the bigger, faster Seahawks, who pulled away for the 80-47 win. With the win, the Decatur girls advanced to play Huntingtown in the second round at home on Thursday.
