McKahan, Bennett Win State Regional Titles

BERLIN- Two Stephen Decatur varsity wrestlers won regional championships at the state 3A-4A South tournament last weekend and a total of six Seahawks advanced to the state championships this weekend.

The Seahawks finished second overall as a team behind host Huntingtown last weekend in the 3A-4A South region tournament with two titles, two second-place finishes, a third and a fourth. The top four finishers in each weight class in the regional tournament advanced to the state championship meet at Cole Field House at the University of Maryland.

At 113, Andy McKahan swept three matches including a victory over Chopticon’s Jarrett Arnold to win the championship. Nick Bennett won the championship at 145 after sweeping all three matches including a victory over Andrew Lee of Leonardtown in the title bout.

Andrew Borradaile finished second at 160 after winning his first two bouts to reach the finals. Borradaile fell to Jackson Drum of Northern in the final. At 220, Decatur’s Ethan Eibl also won his first two matches before falling to Kyle Lamond of Northern in the title bout.

At 126, Nate Rosenblatt won his first match, but lost in his second. Rosenblatt then won his next two matches including a victory over Ricky Bryant of Eleanor Roosevelt to take third in the weight class. At 106, Robert Kaminski followed a similar path, winning his first match and falling in the second round. Kaminski won his third match, but fell in the third-place bout to finish fourth. T.J. Scafone finished sixth at 120 and Caleb Massey finished fifth at 195.

Kaminski, McKahan, Rosenblatt, Bennett, Borradaile and Eibl all advanced to the state championship tournament this weekend. Kaminski will face David Reagan of Bel Air in the first round. McKahan will face Nolan Smith of Paint Branch in the first round, Rosenblatt will square off against Magruder’s Andrew Barnes, Bennett will face Austin Pagnotta of Glenelg, Borradaile will face North Hagerstown’s Coleman McHose and Eibl will face T.J. Patterson of Northwest.
