Seahawk Boys Unbeaten in January

BERLIN- Stephen Decatur’s boys’ varsity basketball team remained unbeaten in January after a dramatic 70-68 win over Parkside last Thursday.

The Seahawks ran their post-holiday break record to 4-0 for the month of January with a win over the Rams, but it certainly wasn’t easy. The Seahawks led 19-13 after one quarter and extended the lead to 39-30 at the half. The two teams played a fairly even third quarter with Decatur outscoring Parkside, 17-15, during the period.

However, the Rams mounted a big comeback in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Seahawks, 23-12, to pull even at 68-68 with time running down. Decatur’s Tyler Hunter then scored on a lay-up with 10 seconds left to give the Seahawks a 70-68 win. Hunter led Decatur with 18 points, while Colin Gaynor added 17.

The win was the fourth straight for the Seahawks following the holiday break with other victories coming against Washington, Snow Hill and Bennett. Decatur’s last regular season loss came at the hands of county rival Pocomoke back on December 20. The Seahawks split two games during the Governor’s Challenge over the holiday break.

With the win over Parkside, Decatur’s record now stands at 7-3 with an 8-4 mark including the Govenor’s Challenge games. Tuesday’s game against Mardela was wiped out by weather and has been rescheduled for February 3. The Seahawks are scheduled to play Wicomico on the road this evening.
