Seahawks Cruise Past Jaguars, 62-30

BERLIN- Showing no signs of rust following the long holiday break, Stephen Decatur’s girls’ varsity basketball team cruised past visiting Washington, 62-30, on Tuesday to improve to 8-2 on the season.

In their first regular season game after the winter break, the Seahawks jumped out to a big early lead on the Jaguars at home on Tuesday and never looked back. Marina Jones got Decatur on the board early with a put-back and a 2-0 lead before Dayona Godwin scored on three straight layups to put Decatur ahead 8-0 with just over a minute into the game.

Washington got on the board with a layup at the 5:32 mark in the first, but a jumper by Jones and two more fast break buckets by Godwin pushed the lead to 14-2. Jillian Petito and Godwin each scored to extend the lead to 16-2 before the Jaguars picked up their second basket of the game at the 1:32 mark to cut the lead to 16-4. Godwin added two more layups in the closing minute of the first and the quarter ended with Decatur leading 22-4.

At the start of the second, Washington converted three free throws to cut the lead to 22-7, but the Seahawks responded with a layup by Lexie Van Kirk to push the lead to 24-7. Erin Florek scored a layup off a nice assist and Ellie Bargar made a free throw to extend the Seahawk lead to 27-9 with just over five minutes remaining. Florek then converted two straight jumpers to extend the lead to 31-9 before Washington stopped the bleeding with a three-pointer to cut the lead to 31-12. Jones and Godwin each scored late in the second and the Seahawks took a 37-12 lead into intermission.

Decatur really started to pull away at the start of the third quarter with an 8-0 run. Petito started the run with a layup off a nice assist by Ally Beck. Godwin scored twice and Payton Van Kirk scored once during the run to extend the lead to 45-2. Washington stopped the run with a jumper from the corner with just over five minutes left in the period to cut the lead to 45-15.

Jones scored on a turnaround jumper, than scored again off nice assists by Godwin and Petito to push the lead to 49-15. Another layup by Petito extended the lead to 51-15 with time running down in the third. A jumper from the corner by the Jaguars cut the lead to 51-17 with just over a minute left in the period and another bucket just before the end of the third cut the lead to 51-19.

The two late buckets in the third carried over to the start of the fourth as Washington scored on three straight trips down the floor to cut the Decatur lead to 51-25. However, Barger then scored on a nice assist from Petito to stop the run and extend the lead to 53-25. A jumper by Beck and a layup by Godwin extended the lead to 57-25. Godwin hit a long three-pointer to push the lead to 60-25. Blair Yesko ended the scoring for Decatur with a layup late in the fourth to complete the Seahawks’ rout, 62-30.
