Newark Family Displaced After Destructive Fire

NEWARK — A family of nine was displaced this week after a residential house fire in Newark in central Worcester County on Wednesday afternoon.
Around 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday, the Berlin and Newark Fire departments responded to a reported dwelling fire on Bowden Rd. in Newark. First-arriving units reported heavy smoke and fire showing from the two-story residence.
Firefighters and equipment from the Showell, Ocean Pines and Powellville Fire Departments were brought in to assist and the fire was extinguished and contained to the building of origin.
The residence was not occupied at the time and no injuries were reported. However, a total of nine individuals including the owner, Mohammed Nawaz, and his wife and six children along with his father lived in the residence and were displaced by the fire. The Red Cross was brought in and is assisting the family.
The cause of the fire is listed as undetermined and the investigation remained open as of late Thursday afternoon. Anyone with additional information is urged to contact Chief Deputy Fire Marshal Matt Owens at 410-632-5666.
