BERLIN- Stephen Decatur’s boys’ varsity basketball team closed out its regular season last weekend, splitting its final two games, and now gets ready to start the state 3A-East Region tournament.
The Seahawks had an up-and-down final stretch, beating Parkside, 59-50, in the final Bayside Conference regular season game last Thursday, before falling to Indian River in a close one, 72-69, in the regular season finale last Saturday. Against Parkside, Jesse Engle led the Seahawks with 25 points.
With the split of its final two games, the Seahawks finished with an 8-9 record in a season that saw some flashes of promise. Decatur was never able to string together a bunch of wins in a row and followed a win one, lose one pattern for much of the year. The Seahawks will now put the regular season behind them as they prepare for a possible run in the state Class 3A-East region tournament, which gets underway next week. Decatur is the 10th seed in the region and will face seventh-seeded Centennial in the first round. Second-seeded River Hill awaits the winner. Meanwhile, Bennett is the top seed in the 3A-East region and will face the winner of the first-round game between Wilde Lake and Hebron. The regional tournament gets underway next Tuesday.
