BERLIN- With a new head coach at the helm, Stephen Decatur’s men’s varsity basketball team kicked off the 2010-2011 campaign with a 50-41 win over Colonel Richardson on Tuesday.
Mark Engle, an assistant under Coach Travis Lloyd last year, takes over at Decatur this year with a handful of returning players, including prolific scorer Tre Foreman, along with a cast of new characters. If Engle, who coached at Delmarva Christian for four years before coming over to Decatur as an assistant last year, is hoping to pick up where the Seahawks left off last year, he got a strong performance from his team in the season opener on Tuesday. Decatur had a remarkable turnaround last year, finishing 22-5, and got off to a great start against Colonel Richardson on Tuesday with a 50-41 win.
Foreman led the way with 13 points and eight rebounds, while senior center Matt Swistak added 10 points and seven boards. Coach Engle’s son Jesse Engle scored eight points and senior forward Dre Smith grabbed 12 rebounds. Foreman, Swistak and Smith will make up Decatur’s starting front guard, with guards Corey Zimmer and Drakar Purnell at the guard positions. Other Seahawks expected to get considerable playing time this year include Engle, football standout Teron Tyre, Cory Tingle, Colin Maccari, Terry Tate and Troy Bollinger.
