OCEAN CITY – A four-car
pile-up on the Route 90 bridge on Monday sent eight people to the hospital with
non-life threatening injuries and snarled mid-day traffic along one of the main
access points to the resort.
Around 10:15 a.m. on
Monday, a Toyota 4runner heading west failed to reduce its speed enough to
avoid a collision with a Lexus RX300, which had stopped suddenly because of
traffic conditions on the span. The resulting collision forced the Lexus across
the centerline and into the eastbound lane on the bridge. Meanwhile, another
Toyota 4runner traveling eastbound on Route 90 collided head on with the Lexus.
From the force of the
head-on collision, the rear of the eastbound Toyota was forced off the roadway
and onto the metal barrier on the bridge, causing damage to the span. All of
the drivers and passengers of the three westbound vehicles were transported to
PRMC in Salisbury with non-life threatening injuries. The conditions of the injured
have not been made public. All in all, eight individuals were taken to the
hospital.
The driver of the Toyota
that ran into the back of the second vehicle, identified as Walter Calle of
Coatesville, Pa., was charged as the at-fault driver in the accident.
