Seahawks Sweep Bayside Track Titles

BERLIN- Decatur’s boys’ and girls’ varsity track teams swept the Bayside Championships last week, taking first in both meets and collecting several strong finishes in individual competitions.

The Seahawk boys’ team came in first in total team points with 96, topping second place Kent Island (75) and Parkside (69.5). On the girls’ side, the Seahawks also claimed the Bayside Championship meet with 81 team points, followed by North Caroline (56.6) and Kent Island (52). The meet, hosted by Decatur, was limited to 12 events because of rain.

In individual events on the boys’ side of the meet, Cordonte Ayres finished first in the 100M while Javon Williams finished fourth. In the 400M, James Leighton finished fourth while Joey Lertora came in fifth. Decatur’s Mitch Witherow ran well in the longer distances, finishing second in the 1600M and third in the 3200M. The Seahawks also finished second in the 4X800 relay.

The Seahawks also fared well in the field events during the meet. Max Hulme took third in the high jump, while Bradley Hollowell came in second and Matt Allenbaugh came in third in the pole vault. Joey Lertora finished fifth in the long jump. In the shot put, Emmanuel Smith came in second and Josh Bock came in third. Smith also finished third in the discus.

The Decatur girls were even more impressive in their individual events during the meet, collecting several first place finishes. In the 400M, Bradley Janson finished first while Katherine Janson came in sixth. State indoor track champion Tiara Stanley finished first in both the shot put and the discus. Decatur’s Jeanna Vignale took first in the pole vault, while Lydia Logan took third. The Seahawks also took first in the 4X800 relay and fourth in the 4X200 relay.

In other events, Lauren Cosgriff finished fourth in the 1600M, while Alicia Arrivello took fifth. Arrivello also finished third in the 3200, while Elizabeth Davidson took fourth. Jessica Galuardi finished sixth in the 100M hurdles.
