OCEAN CITY- The only thing the Ocean City golf community enjoys more than hitting the links is hitting the links for a good cause, and perhaps no better opportunity to do that presents itself on Monday, May 11, with the 2nd Annual Cancer Awareness Golf Tournament at the Links at Lighthouse Sound.
This year’s event will help raise funds for a cause near and dear to the resort community. Much of the proceeds from the event will go directly to the family of popular local Rob Chandler, also known as DJ Wax, whose now 16-year-old son Kameron Chandler continues his battle with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia, an often deadly cancer of the blood.
Kameron was first diagnosed with the disease in 2005 at the age of 12, but after going through chemotherapy and radiation along with a bone marrow transplant, his cancer went into remission and he was given a clean bill of health. Unfortunately, his disease returned last October and he underwent another transplant in March and is now recovering in Wilmington.
Kameron and his family have a long and difficult road ahead of them and much of the proceeds from the 2nd Annual Cancer Awareness Tourney at Lighthouse Sound on May 11 will help. Also a beneficiary of the event this year is Terri Ford, who was diagnosed with breast cancer last April. Terri is currently undergoing gene therapy, which will continue until July, and some of the proceeds from the tournament will help with her mounting bills.
The tournament gets underway with registration at 11:30 a.m. with a shotgun start slated for 12:30 p.m. The entry fee of $150 per person or $600 per team includes a box lunch, a buffet dinner, beer and liquor, a silent auction and many prizes. Among the auction items will be several major sports jerseys donated by the Jersey Boyz including an autographed Baltimore Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco jersey and a Washington Redskins tight end Chris Cooley autographed jersey among several others.
