BERLIN- Stephen Decatur’s varsity baseball team relied on a solid starting pitching performance and timely hitting to rout visiting Crisfield, 14-2, in the home opener on Tuesday.
Seahawk starter Brad Stiles turned in a workman-like performance on mound, scattering four hits and striking out four over five innings on Tuesday. Stiles also helped his own cause, delivering a base hit up the middle that scored two runs in the decisive fourth inning.
Both teams traded blows in the first two innings as Decatur lead 3-2 after two. However, the Seahawks began stringing hits together in the third inning to pull away from the Crabbers. Decatur scored four times in the third to extend the lead to 7-2, then finished Crisfield off in the fourth with four more runs to extend the lead to 11-2.
Chris Bunting and Troy Bennett each drove in a run in the fourth to extend the lead to 9-2. With runners on second and third and one out, Stiles lined a base hit up the middle to extend the lead to 11-2. The Seahawks tacked on three more runs in the late innings to come away with the 14-2 win.
Lucas Koenig led the Seahawks with five hits and three RBIs, while Paul Stortini also drove in three. Bunting drove in two runs and also pitched two scoreless innings in relief.
