BERLIN- Stephen Decatur’s varsity basketball team dropped its first two games of the 2008-2009 season this week, but already the team has shown signs of heading in the right direction.

Two years removed from a one-win season and just one year after winning only four games, the Seahawks on the surface appear to be up to the old tricks just two games into this season, but there is reason for optimism. Despite dropping its first two games of the 2008-2009 campaign this week, Decatur was competitive in both contests and show signs of optimism under second-year coach Travis Lloyd.

On Monday, the Seahawks dropped the home opener to Washington, 47-34, but, despite the final outcome, Decatur was very much in the contest. On Tuesday, the Seahawks hit the road for the first time this year for a game with Mardela and were even more competitive. Mardela ended up winning the game, 60-53, but Decatur made a few good runs to stay in the contest.

In the Mardela game on Tuesday, Decatur’s Tre Foreman led the Seahawks with 11 points while James Merryman contributed 10. After scoring just 34 against Washington on Monday, Decatur turned in a nice offensive game on Tuesday with 53 points, which could be a sign the Seahawks offense is starting to come together somewhat.

It doesn’t get any easier for Decatur however. The Seahawks hit the road tonight for a game against always-tough James M. Bennett before returning for a home game next Tuesday against Worcester County rival Pocomoke. They close out the early part of the season with a pair of road games against Wicomico and Kent Island before the holidays.
