Hospital Now Operating NICU

SALISBURY – Peninsula Regional Medical Center recently received designation as a Level IIIA Perinatal Referral Center from the Maryland Institute for Emergency Medical Service Systems (MIEMSS).

This designation allows Peninsula Regional to operate as a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, or NICU, providing intensive care to infants, including those with very low birth weight and as young as 28 weeks gestational age. The Medical Center earned this designation by showing MIEMSS representatives during an intensive on-site inspection that it possesses the necessary facility, equipment and staffing resources as required by the rigorous standards of Maryland’s Level IIIA program.

“We are very pleased to be able to offer this much needed level of care to the community,” said Alan Newberry, President/CEO of Peninsula Regional Medical Center. “This designation as a NICU verifies our commitment to providing high quality care for even the youngest patients on the Delmarva Peninsula.”

At Peninsula Regional’s NICU, a team of board-certified/eligible Neonatologists, Clinical Nurse Specialists, Neonatal Nurses, Respiratory Therapists and Social Workers work together to provide comprehensive care for premature and critically ill newborns. It combines state-of-the-art technology and experienced care giving in a developmentally supportive and nurturing environment for the newborns and their families. A Neonatologist is available 24 hours a day for consultation with obstetricians and pediatricians. Peninsula Regional Medical Center delivers over 2,200 babies per year. Although the majority of newborns – around 90 percent – are healthy and will not require high-risk intensive care, approximately 220 babies delivered every year at the Medical Center are in need of intensive care. In the past, parents would have to be separated from their sick or premature newborns as they were transported across the Bay Bridge for intensive care. Peninsula Regional’s NICU now allows babies to be treated locally, allowing families to stay together during that critical time.

“Our Level IIIA designation provides yet another layer of comfort for parents of newborns,” added Regina Kundell, Director of Women’s and Children’s Services for Peninsula Regional. “If you are having a high-risk pregnancy or you experience unexpected complications, it’s reassuring to know that you and your baby will receive excellent care right here, close to home and family.”
