Monday, May 5 – Berlin Mayor Dies At Home

BERLIN – Berlin Mayor Tom Cardinale died Saturday of a reported cardiac arrest at his home just a week shy of his 70th birthday.

Cardinale reportedly went into cardiac arrest around 1 p.m. on Saturday afternoon. EMS crews responded but could revive him.

Born in Little Italy in Baltimore on May 11, 1938, Cardinale was elected mayor of Berlin in 2004. He was in the process of organizing his re-election campaign.

Cardinale held a teaching degree from the University of Maryland and taught in Howard County school system as well as Baltimore County and Baltimore City. He was also a former president of Canterbury Construction, a family business. He is survived by his wife Kay.

Cardinale relocated to Berlin several years ago and quickly became involved in local politics.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at St. John Neuman Catholic Church on Beauchamp Road near Ocean Pines. The Rev. Thomas Protack will be the celebrant. A viewing will be held Tuesday from 2-4 p.m. at Burbage Funeral Home and an hour prior to the Mass on Wednesday. Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Park near Berlin.
