BERLIN- It was a tough week for Stephen Decatur varsity basketball as both the boys’ and girls’ teams suffered two losses.
Last Friday, the Decatur boys, who have shown marked improvement this year despite their 3-9 record, fell to Mardela, 76-59. There is no shame in losing to Mardela, which has compiled an impressive 10-2 mark thus far this season. In the Mardela game, Decatur’s Darry Ames scored 18 points, Tim Donnelly scored 14 and Blair Woodard added 12. Decatur followed the Friday loss to Mardela with a 75-53 loss to James M. Bennett on Tuesday.
The Decatur girls followed a similar pattern this week. The Seahawks were doubled up by Mardela, 38-19, last Friday in their lowest point output of the season. Things didn’t get much better for the Seahawks on Tuesday as they fell to Bennett, 41-28. The Seahawks were victims of the long shot on Tuesday as Bennett’s Quita Jones scored 21 points including five three-pointers.
The Decatur boys’ record now stands at 3-9 on the season with another tough stretch of the schedule upcoming. The Seahawks played county rival Pocomoke last night in a game played too late to be included in this edition and will face Wicomico on the road and Crisfield at home next week.
The Decatur girls’ record is now 2-10 on the year. The Seahawks hit the road tonight for a game against Pocomoke and play Wicomico at home next Tuesday.
