Red Cross Chapter Head Retires

SALISBURY – After 13 years of dedicated service to the communities of Worcester, Somerset and Wicomico counties, Alan Lee will retire his position as director of the Lower Shore Chapter of the American Red Cross.

In Lee’s 13 years as director, he witnessed an explosion of both growth in population and emergency service "demand" on the tiny chapter’s staff of paid employees. He took over a chapter that was greatly in need of re-organization and raised it to a new level of self sustainability, efficiency and productivity. The chapter has grown its trained volunteer unit to include over 240 local community members who respond daily to both large and small emergencies with the tri-county area.

During Lee’s term, the Eastern Shore has witnessed catastrophic emergencies including Hurricane Isabel, which flooded and displaced hundreds and hundreds of individuals from the Eastern Shore of Virginia to the Annapolis and Baltimore waterfronts. Many businesses and individuals experienced loss of property and homes. Hurricane Katrina also had an enormous impact on the Lower Shore Chapter but responding in perfect form, the chapter went right to work, furiously training and deploying these trained volunteers to New Orleans. In the end the Lower Shore Chapter gained national recognition for sending more trained volunteers to help the Katrina victims than any other Red Cross Chapter in the nation per capita.
