Tuesday, October 2 – Charity Cookout To Help Coastal Bays

OCEAN CITY – Fager’s Island on 59th Street in Ocean City will be holding their 2nd Annual Charity Cookout to benefit the Maryland Coastal Bays Program on Sunday, Oct. 7 from 4-8 p.m.

The blowout includes a $6 barbeque dinner, live music, live animals and a host of local celebrities who will be gallivanting about the restaurant to pump up the crowds.

The modest cover, silent auction, and 50/50 raffle will each go to benefit the Coastal Bays Program, which protects the land and waters surrounding Ocean City.

The program is currently involved in a number of land conservation efforts and is restoring the Bishopville Prong to again allow upstream breeding of fish after a 131-year absence.

The program is also working to remove sewage outfalls into the coastal bays and is leading a tri-state planning effort to assist Delaware and Virginia in planning for a greener shore in the future.

This year the program hired a full-time education coordinator to kickstart school-age education programs, renew its Upward Bound work with disadvantaged students, and begin education on the 570-acre Cherry Point Farm the program helped protect in 2005. The farm sits just south of Route 54 on Assawoman Bay.

Money raised at the event will also help the program continue its important work with birds, reptiles and amphibians, horseshoe crabs, and terrapins.

Michelle and John Fager will be donating all of the food for the event, the modest cover charge and thousands of dollars in advertising. A generous donor has also stepped up to offer $2 for every $1 raised by Coastal Bays until Dec. 15.

Those interested in donating money who cannot make the event can call Evelina Erickson at 410-213-BAYS or go to www.mdcoastalbays.org. The program is also accepting items for auction.
