Sally Palmer Shipley

BERLIN – Sally Palmer Shipley, 41, died Dec. 9, 2010 at her home. She was born in Salisbury to Rollie and Roberta Willis Palmer.

She worked for Atlantic Dental as a patient coordinator and helped out at Angelo’s Restaurant. She also sat with patients at Atlantic General Hospital. She was a member of Hope with Support.

She is survived by her husband, Mark Shipley, and her parents Rollie and Roberta Palmer. She was predeceased by her son, Trever Rollie Hewitt.

Services were held. Arrangements by Burbage Funeral Home.

Josephine Mueller
BERLIN – Josephine Mueller, 71, died Wednesday, Dec. 8, 2010 at her home in Berlin.

Born in London, England, she was the daughter of the late George and Caroline Edith Halewell Hinson. She is survived by her life partner, Thelma Thompson, and a son, Michael Mueller and his wife Kim. She was adored grandmother of two grandchildren, Joshua and Victoria Mueller, all of Berlin. Also surviving is a brother, Sid Hinson of London, England, and nephew, Daniel Hinson and his wife, Einir.

She had worked as a veterinary technician and also as a school bus driver. She was a Red Hat Society supporter and an active humane society and animal shelter advocate. She was an Assateague Island environmentalist and preservationist.

Gertrude R. Howard
BERLIN – Gertrude Rose Howard, 86, died Friday Dec. 10, 2010.

Born in Washington D.C., she was the daughter of the late Antonino and Gertrude Pedone. She is survived by her daughters, Nancy Howard and Diane Howard and her husband Ted.

No service is planned at this time.

Charlotte Ann Wootten

BERLIN – Charlotte Ann Wootten, age 78, died Saturday, Dec. 11, 2010 at Coastal Hospice at the Lake in Salisbury.

Born in Libertytown, she was the daughter of the late William Lee Burbage, Sr. and Lola Adkins Burbage. She was preceeded in death by her son, Scott Lee Wootten in 1985. She is survived by her brothers, William Lee Burbage, Jr. and Richard Franklin Burbage and his wife Betty; nephew, William “Ted” Burbage; niece, Jennifer Leigh Figgs; and great-niece, Billie Jo Burbage of Ocean City.

She had worked for DuPont in the nylon department, C&P telephone Company, and later, at Stephen Decatur High School in the cafeteria for many years.

Shirley Ann Hankin

BALTIMORE – Shirley Ann Hankin, 78, of Baltimore, died Sunday, Dec. 12, 2010 at Arden Courts in Baltimore.

She was born Nov. 15, 1932 in Baltimore. She is survived by her husband, Robert M. Hankin, Baltimore; a daughter, Cynthia H. Leiner and her husband, Bruce, of Ocean City; two sons, Michael D. Hankin and his wife, Ann, of Glyndon, and Steven M. Hankin and his wife, Lisa, of New York; five grandchildren, Josh and Jesse Leiner of Ocean City and Emily, Lacey and Connor Hankin of Glyndon; her brother, Edward H. Blickstein of New Jersey; and her caregiver and dear friend, Betty Hardee of Baltimore. Funeral services will be private.

William R. Tubbs, Jr.

BERLIN – William “Bill” Robert Tubbs, Jr. age 63, died Dec. 12, 2010 at Atlantic General Hospital.

Born in Bishopville to William and Elizabeth May Morgan Tubbs, he is survived by his two sisters, Mary Eubanks and her husband Johnny, and Ann Taylor and her husband George.

He was a mechanic and business owner.

Carolyn Timmons Suit
BERLIN – Carolyn Timmons Suit, 91, died peacefully on Dec. 15, 2010 at her Gull Creek apartment in Berlin.

She was born on June 4, 1919 to Olive Bounds and Coleman Timmons in Newark. She was married to Benjamin William Suit.

She built the first Capstan Apartments in Ocean City in 1953 at 25th Street and the Boardwalk. The motel building was built in 1969 and the years of the Capstan girls from Bridgewater College followed. During the school months, she taught Home Economics at Stephen Decatur High School from 1956 to 1969. She operated the Capstan until 1998.

Her daughter, Barbara, and husband, Ted Janssen of Severna Park, Md., and her son, Scott, and wife, Lalita Suit of Fiji, survive her.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 18, 2010 at St. Paul’s. In lieu of flowers, send contributions to the Memorial Fund, St. Paul’s by the Sea Episcopal Church, 302 North Baltimore Avenue, P.O. Box 1207, Ocean City, Md. 21843.

Thomas F. Rommel, Sr.

BERLIN – Thomas Frederick Rommel Sr., 87, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 14, 2010 at Coastal Hospice at the Lake in Salisbury.

Born in Baltimore, he was the son of the late Ernest and Emma Rommel. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Ann Weiss Rommel. Also surviving are a son, Rick Rommel, and his wife Kelly of Delmar, and a daughter, Mary R. Will, and her husband Bruce, of Forrest Hill, Md.

There are six grandchildren, Rachel Turbutt, David Will, Katie Will, Brian Will, Sarah Will, and Antoinette Rommel. There are two great-grandchildren, Ben and Emily Turbutt.

He was a World War II Navy veteran, and later worked at Bethlehem Steel Co. at Sparrows Point.

He was a parishioner at St John Neumann Catholic Church, a member of Notre Dame Council, in Baltimore, Grand Commander of Alcala Caravan Alhambra, 4th Degree Knights of Columbus and a member of the American Legion Post #166 in Ocean City.

A mass of Christian burial will be held on Friday at 11 a.m. at St. John Neumann Catholic Church. Rev. Thomas Protack will be the celebrant. Friends may call one hour prior to the service. A committal service will be held on Monday at 1 p.m. at the Eastern Shore Veterans Cemetery near Hurlock. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Coastal Hospice at the Lake, P.O. Box 1733 Salisbury, Md. 21804, or St. John Neumann Catholic Church Scholarship Fund, 11211 Beachamp Rd. Berlin, Md. 21811.

Joseph Holowach

BERLIN – Joseph Holowach, age 88 of Ocean Pines and formerly of Cincinnati, Ohio, passed away on Dec. 14, 2010 at Gull Creek Senior Community in Berlin.

Holowach was born to the late Harry and Paraska Holowach and raised in Donora, Pa. He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Alice. He is survived by a sister, Irene Golombos of Manville, N.J.; a brother, Harry Holowach and his wife Olga of Ocean Pines; six nieces; two nephews; and 12 great-nieces and nephews.

In World War II, he served with the 66th Infantry Division in the European theater, where he was awarded the Purple Heart and two campaign battle stars. During his later employment with GE, he was the recipient of five patent awards.

A service will be held at the Burbage Funeral Home in Berlin on Saturday, Dec. 18 at 11 a.m. Friends may call one hour prior to the service. Rev. Daniel Hubiak will officiate. Interment will be on Tuesday at Fair View Cemetery in Roanoke, Va.
