BERLIN- Stephen Decatur’s varsity football team dropped a tough one last weekend, falling to Wicomico, 18-8, on the road in the second game of the season for both teams.
Decatur swarmed Arcadia in the season opener two weeks ago, 50-28, and was feeling confident heading into its Bayside South conference opener on the road at Wicomico last Friday. The two teams battled it out in the first quarter until Decatur’s London Drummond broke loose for a 78-yard touchdown run on the last play in the first quarter to stake the Seahawks to an 8-0 lead.
Drummond’s 78-yard dash to the end zone was it for the Seahawks, however. Decatur did hold the 8-0 lead heading into the half, but the Indians scored 18 unanswered points in the second half to pull away for the 18-8 win. After Friday’s loss, Decatur’s record now stands at 1-1 on the early season.
The Seahawks are scheduled to face Washington, a team it has dominated in recent years, in the home opener on Friday, but the contest could be in jeopardy because of the storm. After the Washington game, the Seahawks play the next four against tough Bayside North opponents beginning with a road game against Kent Island next week, followed by a home game against North Caroline. The tough stretch against north rivals continues with Queen Anne’s and Easton.
