BERLIN- Stephen Decatur’s boys’ varsity soccer team got in the win column this week, knocking off visiting Mardela, 2-0, on Monday to improve to 1-2 on the young season.

The Seahawks dropped their first two contests of the season in close fashion, falling to North Caroline on the road, 2-1, and Pocomoke on the road, also by a score of 2-1. For much of Monday’s home opener on Monday against Mardela, it appeared the Seahawks could be heading toward another tough loss.

The Decatur offense put almost constant pressure on the Mardela defense with the ball on that side of the field for much of the first half. The Seahawks had multiple opportunities, but just couldn’t seem to finish big plays when they had the chances. Meanwhile, Mardela had far fewer opportunities in the first half, but actually had better chances to score. The Warriors attacked the Decatur goal on multiple occasions in the first half, but came away with nothing as the scored remained tied at 0-0 at the intermission.

The same scenario played out early in the second half with both teams getting opportunities to score. The Decatur defense clamped down on Mardela’s opportunities, while the Seahawk offense was finally able to finish. A pair of second-half goals by Jack Hammond and Evan Heim staked the Seahawks to a 2-0 lead and they held on for their first victory of the season.
