AGH Launches eICU
BERLIN – On July 27,
Atlantic General Hospital joined four other Maryland eCare hospitals who have
implemented the VISICU eICU® technology, which allows for remote
monitoring of its most critically ill patients.
Complementing the
intensive care provided by Atlantic General’s clinical staff and intensivists, eICU critical care physicians and nurses
– based at Christiana Care’s eICU
monitoring center – closely watch patient conditions 24/7 remotely, through
video and audio technology combined with intelligent monitoring, sensors and
alarm systems.
While maintaining
patient privacy, the eICU’s remote
center closely monitors patients for any physical change, immediately alerting
local caregivers and recommending corrective action. This additional monitoring
will be especially important during the evenings or when Atlantic General’s
intensivists are otherwise on call.
“eCARE will provide an
additional line of safety and monitoring for all ICU patients,” said Scott
Rose, director of the ICU at Atlantic General. “It does not replace the bedside
nurse or our intensivist physicians. The cameras installed in each room are an
added feature and will only be activated by the ICU staff at Atlantic General,
or if the eCARE team in Christiana notices a potential problem or emergency.”
Studies have shown
improved patient outcomes and decreased lengths of stay in ICUs that have
around-the-clock intensivist coverage. The eICU
program will allow for that, making the road to recovery much shorter for
Atlantic General’s patients, according to a hospital press release.

Non-Profit Breaks Record
SALISBURY – The United
Way of the Lower Eastern Shore announced this week the organization will
provide a record breaking $1,305,450 for local programs and services, an
astounding 15% increase over last year’s funding levels despite difficult
economic times.
Outside of government,
the United Way is the largest direct funder of local non-profit programs
touching the lives of over 100,000 people in need each year on the Lower Shore.
This increase in funding will help to support 57 health and human service
programs for 24 non-profit agencies in Wicomico, Worcester, Somerset and
Dorchester counties.
The United Way Community
Investment process involves a four-month intensive review of local agency
program needs, efficiency and effectiveness. The 2010 Community Investment
Committee, led by Chairman Bruce Bright of Ayres, Jenkins Gordy & Almand,
was comprised of 20 trained volunteers representing business and community
leaders in all four Lower Shore counties.
“Annually the Community
Investment Committee spends over 600 volunteer hours to ensure donations are
being distributed to agencies who demonstrate measurable results and are
improving the lives of those who need it the most. The unmatched local
stewardship and accountability for every dollar contributed is what our donors
value and trust most about our United Way,” said Bright.
United Way Executive
Director Kathleen Momme applauded the generous community.
“The tremendous amount
of support of so many caring individuals who give so much of their time to volunteer
and sacrifice financially is a great
commentary on the caring community we live in. The United Way motto to ‘Live
United’ through giving, advocating and volunteering is alive and well on the
Lower Eastern Shore of Maryland,” said Mommé.
