BERLIN — In response to criticism from residents as well as the largest union in the state — the Maryland State Education Association — the Worcester County Board of Education issued a statement last night clarifying its position on accepting the Trump campaign’s visit tonight.

“Worcester County Public Schools acknowledges the concerns expressed by different advocacy groups about permitting a presidential candidate the use of a school facility.  The rental of our facilities to any group or organization does not imply an endorsement of the event or candidate, said Worcester County Public Schools Coordinator of Public Relations and Special Programs.   “Worcester County Public Schools’ policy does not discriminate on the basis of political or religious affiliation.  The facility policy does not exclude a political candidate from renting facilities because of the views he or she conveys.”

Sterrs reported the Trump campaign will pay $4,992 to rent the school for tonight’s event. Sterrs said this morning she had no information to report on whether the event had moved outside to the stadium because of the large amount of tickets secured.

In other news, the Worcester County Sheriff’s Office issued a traffic alert for this afternoon.

Motorists should expect major delays “in and around Route 50 and Seahawk Road as well as points west and east along Route 50. At this time, there are no plans to close any roads but that will be subject to change. Maryland State Police, Berlin Police, and Deputies will be providing traffic control in the immediate area of the high school beginning at 3 p.m. Schools will dismiss at their regular time but parents should be aware of potential delays getting into and leaving the schools during this time. Every effort will be made to ensure a safe and orderly exit.”

Once the event is over, traffic is expected to be a concern as well.

“If at all possible, please use alternate routes if you must drive in that area. Worcester County Fire Police will also be on hand directing participants on where to park when the school has been dismissed,” the statement read.
