Decatur Wrestlers Solid At State Meet

BERLIN- Stephen Decatur’s varsity wrestling team turned in a solid performance at the state championship meet last weekend with two top place finishes and a 13th overall finish as a team.

Based on the regional championships, Decatur sent four wrestlers to the state 4A-3A championship meet last weekend in Prince George’s County including Robert Kaminski (106), Josh Lawson (113), Jeremy Danner (120) and Andy McKahan (132). Kaminski and McKahan won regional titles and entered states as high seeds.

After the two day event, McKahan finished second in his bracket, while Kaminski finished fourth. Danner and Lawson wrestled well but did not advance. Decatur finished 13th overall among the 66 schools represented in the state championship meet.

In the 106 bracket, Kaminski beat Phil Bramucci of Dulaney in his opener, then beat Kemper Stearns of Walter Johnson in the second round. Kaminski then fell to Springbrook’s Christian Balmoris. Kaminski then beat Kids Gbnogrios of Parkdale, but lost to Eli Guttentag of Bethesda-Chevy Chase to finish fourth overall.

In the 132 bracket, McKahan beat Berkey Todd of Digital Harbor in his opener, then beat James Bamberger of Walt Whitman in the second round. McKahan beat Luis Orellana of Montgomery to reach the finals against Jason Kraisser of Centennial. Kraisser beat McKahan, who earned a second place finish at 132.
